3G For Everyone?

iPhone 3G

So obviously everyone’s heard by now, and even these guys are getting their lawn chairs ready to wait in line on July 11th. I think DaringFireball was among the first to write down exactly what a lot of people thought: Apple plans to stage an industry takeover by slicing the price of a Magic Jesus Phone in half.

Basically, every manufacturer will have to justify why their phones don’t have the same usability, touch-screen, and web access (now at a reasonable price point) that Apple perfected out of the gate. In short, Apple wants to roll out The iPod Strategy in a new segment. Remember how every single alternative MP3 player became a dinosaur the day iPod launched, because everything was right about the iPod experience? They hope history repeats itself, then iPhone gets picked up by IT departments with Exchange capability.

The only sticking point I see in this pre-buy period is AT&T’s pricing plans in the US, if recent speculation is to be believed. Apple is beholden to them and their bottom-line, which is a thorn in the “iTunes as total experience” side of the strategy. But if that can be worked out long-term or simply isn’t true, The Takeover Part 2 has begun.
