Times New Viking, Rip It Off
Written on February 20, 2008

Noise rock should never sound this happy, having mostly been the realm of biting sarcasm (McLusky), shoegazer mumbling (Jesus and Mary Chain, My Bloody Valentine), and vitriolic bile (The Jesus Lizard). But Times New Viking somehow manage to marry sugar-sweet singalongs at volumes that could collapse buildings. Cheery female vocals and infectious chord progressions blasting beneath the Columbus trio’s Matador debut are like the thousand armies of Billy Corgan descending upon you – with far more hair and far less moping. Rip It Off has been a constant in my iTunes rotation from the first listen, and I can see it staying there well into the Aught Eight.
